Heart-tending for heart-breaking times

Whether we refuse love or risk ourselves in love, there is actually no sincere path a person can take without having their hearts broken.
- David Whyte
These are heart-breaking times. And as sensitive, heart-centered people, there’s no sincere way to go through this moment without feeling this. You may hold a wider vision and trust in this unraveling, and still, the harm and hurt is real and must be tended to.
Living with a heart open right now, if you’re connected with your body, means that you’ll feel. Expect to grieve, to rage, to feel anxious or afraid at times. Let it move through you so it doesn’t take you down into hopelessness or despair.
I feel like I’ve been saying that “we’re in times of upheaval” for many years now. And what I’ve been told by the plants, the earth, and my guides, is that this will continue for years to come.
Why this moment needs sensitive hearts
We’re in a moment of history where old systems are crumbling. We’ve reached a point where we can no longer live under the harm of Capitalism, Individualism, and Colonial Patriarchal structures that have controlled us under a very powerful spell.

These systems have had us believe that we’re separate from one another, and separate from the earth body. These systems have let us believe in scarcity and hierarchy. They’ve made us fear differences and diversity, sexuality and pleasure, our body’s wisdom and the feminine way of being. They demonized witches and women. They've turned us against others—and against ourselves—based on the color of our skin, who and how we love, our gender expression, and our spiritual beliefs.
They’ve kept us fighting against and fearing one another, so they stay safe in their elite power, silently controlling our politics and media. Boy do they love keeping us in a paralyzed fear state.
But people are waking up. We’re remembering the truth behind and beyond these systems.
And you, my love, have chosen to live through these times to midwife us out of these tired systems and into the new earth-paradigm of living remembrance. New, yet so deeply ancient, living in our bones.
The thing is… this is going to take a while.
We’re in this for the long haul. We’re inside of the Great Dismantling, which will not go quietly.
So please, take care of yourself.

How to take care of your heart right now
Anchor in your wise inner authority and agency. You don’t have to sacrifice yourself and your joy and your nervous system to meet this moment.
Especially if you’re an empath or highly sensitive person. Your system is different. Sensitives are oriented towards subtlety and can be really traumatized by input that wouldn’t necessarily traumatize another system. Be discerning.
You don’t need to watch horrors every day on your phone. Those images linger and create chaos in your system and begin to shut it down: shut your heart down, shut your nervous system down, shut your critical thinking down.
You’ll be of much greater service to this time if you have capacity to serve.
You also don’t need to show up in any prescribed way. I hear so many voices shouting on social media about how you need to be showing up and if you’re not doing it this one way, you’re a problem. This level of policing I see whenever any new horror is unfolding is so harmful.
And you, my sensitive friend, certainly do not play by the same rules as others.
Yes it’s important to be informed. Yes it’s important to feel. Yes it’s important to take action as you’re able.
And it’s also very important to learn how to stay in your center. To fortify your nervous system and your resolve.
To have a practice of gathering your attention away from the collective and deep into your own body’s truth. This is where aligned action comes from. Action that’s not performative or surface. Action that’s truly aligned with how you’re called to serve, even if it doesn’t look how you think it should, or how others say it needs to look.
Remember that this is a marathon, my love. Take time to rest and restore.
Allow emotions to move through your system so they don’t stay locked in your body, so they don’t harden off your heart (the other kind of heart-break).

And don’t forget to anchor into a wider story of love and joy that’s beyond all the fear-based rhetoric. Practice feeling into the love of the earth and the stars; the beauty and joy of the flowers. Practice living into the vision of a reality that’s beyond (not against) these harmful systems.
Give this to the world. Give your love. Give your open heart. Give your presence and beauty. Give people the graciousness of curiosity and understanding.
An Imbolc invocation for the tender-hearted
At this Imbolc full moon, we honor the stirring of the Spring. We honor the containers that Winter has helped us build to hold the birth of our dreams this year. We aim our focus, and ready ourselves. We anchor into hope. We align our hearts with who and what we’re in devotion to.
Feel the power of this time. Ground yourself in your agency, and in your holy body’s knowing.
We’re in this together.
