Rejecting New Years resolution culture? Here's how to set intentions in Winter

Winter might be the hardest season for people to understand and align with. For Winter is dark, yet the light is growing. Winter is restful, yet there’s a deeply creative process happening inside.

There’s an inner alignment with our dreams and intentions for the year to come. As the light grows, we get to fortify ourselves and become the containers for these seeds to express come Spring.

Every year at New Year’s time, I watch as earth-connected folks reject the urgency, self-improvement, and goal-setting culture that is New Year’s.

A person stands in silhouette on a winter's night, a warm light casting a glow in front of them and illuminating a snowy field and tall trees.

I love this. Those who understand that deep in the darkness of Winter isn’t a time to push ahead with action plans.

And yet, I also hear these same folks talk about the New Year birthing in Spring, and waiting until then to set intentions and align themselves with the year to come.

In both instances (those pushing ahead with goal-oriented action plans at New Year’s, and those waiting till Spring to set intentions) folks are missing out on the gift of Winter.

Aligning your intention setting rituals with the energy of Winter

From a purely energetic perspective, the new year is conceived at Winter Solstice. In the dark womb of Winter the seed of light was planted. There’s a big shift in energy as the days turn from darkening to lightening.

It’s so helpful to utilize these early winter months to welcome these seeds of conception for this coming year. Seeds are planted in the dark. And we get to learn from them, what they will need from us, and how they want to take shape as Spring comes.

We don’t expect a plant to burst forth in Spring without having tended, nourished, and grown the roots over the Winter.

A hand wipes away a dusting of snow to reveal a tiny bouquet of dandelions tied together with twine.

On the one side, folks are trying to plant a seed and expect it to be growing already, and on the other, they’re missing out on planting seeds to be tended to in the darkness.

We’re no longer in the descent of Autumn, but in the slow, intentional awakening that Winter brings. Winter helps us slowly grow, fortify, and contain our energy. We deepen with ourselves and our intentions for the year.

We become the container that can hold who we want to become come Spring. We build our energy right now for ourselves, not yet dispersing it outwardly.

We build relationship with the lives we want to be living, orienting ourselves for the coming Spring.

Don’t miss the sacredness of planting your seeds of desire right now, and getting to listen deeply to how they want to take shape come Spring.
