Getting Comfortable with Liminality

We’re now in the deep, black waters of the dying year, in the last weeks of our journey towards the darkness.

This is the final stretch of deepening into the black fabric of starlight. Where there’s nothing to do but be. Nothing to do but continue to release, more and more and more.

We are in the very real liminal time between death and birth.

Where something has ended but nothing has emerged as new.

Where beginnings are intangible or just out of reach. Where we can communicate with ourselves and the unseen forces of reality a little more keenly. Such a precious time!

I long for us as a culture to sit with the space that death leaves in its wake for a while without trying to fill it.

To let ourselves grieve the finality of things. To allow ourselves to be changed by the impermanence of life. To feel the reality of endings, so that we may re-orient our lives in ways that feel more fulfilling.

To permit ourselves this yearly apprenticeship with death would be so life-giving.

Yet, it’s so, so hard. Because it means we have to sit with hard truths, painful feelings, and deep longings that lurk in the shadowy realms. And not necessarily do anything about it just yet.

It's understandable. This world feels so damn painful as it is. Why would we intentionally confront death and pain and grief?

Well, partially because actually standing present and steady in this seasonal passage gives us practice, gives us strength and stability, for inevitable hard times in our lives.

And also, every time we encounter a death in our lives, no matter what, the preciousness of the-spark-of-living gets reignited. Can you name a time when that didn’t happen for you?

So amidst this season of the void, give yourself space:

Breathe.

Let your breath call you fully present.

Feel yourself.

Feel the emptiness. Feel the dark spaciousness within.

And hone in on that spark of fire that lives at the center of that darkness.

That spark of life that longs to live fully.

Breathe.

Let it get brighter.

That flame that is you.

Feel it expanding in the cauldron of the night.

What does it want to share with you?

Here in the quietude of your own breath and body?

What does this light say to you?

I also want you to remind you, during this time of transition and unknown, that you are held by forces much larger and wider than yourself.

✨ Remember that humans are not the center of the world or the universe.

✨ Remember that no matter what, you have agency in your life, and you can use your life to beautify everything in your sphere of influence.

✨ Remember that there is a larger and longer story unfolding that we will never fully know.

✨ Remember that your vision, your frequency, your hope, and your love matters so much. Stay in contact with that.
